"But I don't want you to get hurt because-" Cat exclaimed, almost angrily, and stopped herself. "Nevermind." The reasoning that she used was that she didn't want to be the cause of any more hurt and guilt and tears, and that was definitely a contributing factor, but she specifically cared about him too much to subject him to such drama. He was too close to her. Her mind churning, she looked out at the stars, and quickly back at Luke, catching his eyes again.

"Because what?" Luke pried on, examining his friend and leaning in slightly, as if listening to a secret. "I tell you everything, you should return the favor!" He grinned almost evily, if that was possible with such an adorable mop of hair and gap in his teeth, and leaned on his hands which were perched on his elbows, his eyes burning with curiosity. He had a tiny, tiny inkling of what she thought of him, and he felt the same.

Cat rolled her eyes. "It doesn't matter," she said absentmindedly. "It's a stupid reason. Go snoop about the ghosts if you want. I don't care." Her last words came out sounding slightly scathing, but she really hadn't meant it that way. Cat just didn't want to admit that she did like him a lot. With a small mischevious smile, she poked the end of his nose with her left index finger, still looking him straight in the eyes.

Luke could read Cat's words quite easily. He could tell that she was confused about him, for sure, but he wasn't sure about much else she had said. With a grin he said, "Thanks. Now tell me everything you know." He could be brutally straightforward sometimes but he didn't want to trick people into telling him what he wanted to know, so he usually just asked.
He took her hand off of his nose, but slowly, because he felt quite strong when he held her hand in his. LUKE! SHE HAS A FREAKING BOYFRIEND! his brain yelled at himself. Quickly he let it go, turning red again.

Cat blushed as well. Luke's hand was warm and comforting and it made a shiver run up her spine when he touched her cold hand. She pulled her hand back into her lap and looked out at the sky, not saying anything because she didn't know what to say. No, Cat, you cannot love him because you already have a boyfriend, she told herself sterly as her eyes looked through her mass of red hair at her companion.

Luke was usually not one to talk about how he felt, and this was no exception. He would not, under any circumstances, tell Cat how he felt about her and ruin his entire life. He didn't know what to do. There was an awkward silence in which Luke stared at Cat and he knew she was also staring at him, but he couldn't say anything. Instead, he tried to break the ice with the first thing that popped out of his mouth.
"So, the weather's nice," he said absent mindedly. DAMN! It was dark out, for god's sake. Why the hell did he say such a stupid, stupid thing?

Cat tried to look out the window, away from her current problem and up towards the stars. It was lovely, actually. "Yeah... it is..." she trailed off, leaning her chin on her hands and putting her elbows on her knees. Her face was quite close to Luke now, but she tried to phase it out of her mind. She had been this close to him before with no problem. Now what was happening to her? Closing her eyes for a second, she sighed as her green eyes surveyed the sky as if it had some sort of answer for her.

God, Cat looked absolutely gorgeous. Luke couldn't take his eyes off of her, hard as he tried. And then, without thinking, he did the absolute stupidest thing he had ever done in his fifteen years. It was the thing he would regret most in his entire life. It was a completely instinctive act, and Luke just did as he felt. He accidentally fell free of his own self-restraint, which was an extremely large problem . He leaned into her face and kissed her gently on the lips, his hand coming up to her face. When he pulled back, he suddenly blinked. "Fuck," he said to himself, slamming his head against the wall behind him for his utter lack of judgement. He had just screwed EVERYTHING up. EVERYTHING. "Cat, I'm so sorry," he whispered, his eyes closed and his face turning a bright shade of pink. (excuse the bad language. )

Cat was in a state of shock. She knew deep down that she really did like Luke an awful lot, but Reuben's dissapointed face came into her head and she was on the verge of tears. She managed to restrain herself though. As he pressed his lips to hers, Cat closed her eyes and her left hand found his empty hand. But when they broke apart, then she remembered, and sank down the wall.
She didn't reply immediately, because she had absolutely no idea what to say. Oh god, she was so confused. As she breathed out, she let out an exasperated sigh. "Luke, it's okay, it's my fault too," she whispered. But then she knew what she had to do. She would have to break up with Reuben. He wasn't around much, and she couldn't two-time him. That would kill her. But then, she would have to keep this a secret. If she started going out with Luke right away, Reuben would know exactly what had happened. She blushed furiously, her eyes welling with tears, and bit her bottom lip.
It was slightly ironic that Cat was more afraid of breaking up with Reuben than the ghosts, but it was true.

Luke buried his face in his hands, completely embarrased by his mistake. There was an incredibly awkward silence in which he made sure not to look up at Cat for fear of kissing her again. He wished he could go back in time and control his urges. Suddenly, he stood up, grabbing his guitar. "Um... I have to go..." he said quickly and turned towards the door to leave. He knew he was being cowardly, and he knew he was making things worse by leaving loose ends, but he didn't want to be in this awkward situation anymore. If they talked later, they would have to have another excuse to meet up somewhere, and Luke had to think of an amazing apology. He slammed the door behind him and descended the stairs three at a time so that he could get back to his dorm quickly.

Cat said nothing. She didn't know what to say. Anything would be better than nothing, she knew, but she couldn't bring herself to say anything. She was still too shocked. When Luke suddenly left, Cat kicked the wall where he had been sitting minutes before and let out a frustrated grunt, sliding down the wall as her eyes welled up with tears. She HATED THIS. She didn't want to have such a screwed up life anymore. A tear of anger rolled down her cheek. Luke could have said something, anything, to make things better, but he hadn't. She felt like screaming, and actually thought of jumping out of the tower to her doom, but decided against it quickly. Cat may have been incredibly confused and on the verge of depression, but in no way was she suicidal. The tears continued to roll down her cheeks as she sat on the windowsill, illuminated by the moonlight.
Then she let out a loud, frustrated scream, kicking the wall several times more before finally calming herself down enough to return back to her dorm room without snapping at anyone. When she returned, she would cry herself to sleep out of anger.
(i guess this is over... aww I feel so bad for luke and the wrath he's going to get from Cat.)
