Usually very few people entered the High Tower, especially late at night. It was too spooky and way too awkward with all the couples making out on either side of you.
Fortunately, tonight the tower was completely deserted, except for a faint outline sitting in a nook in the window with a guitar in hand. Luke hadn't been able to sleep. There were too many things pulsing through his mind, and he had been restless. He had wandered up here alone with his guitar because playing his instrument usually made him slightly drowsy.
His blistered, cut fingers strummed his guitar as he hummed the current song he was playing. It was called Different, by one of his favourite bands, Acceptance. He began to sing softly as he hit the chorus.
I wanted to see something that's different, something you said would change in me. Wanted to be anything different, everything you would change in me.
As he sang, he looked up at the night sky and felt suddenly peaceful. Nature did that to him.

Cat hadn't been sleeping well lately. She hadn't slept well since Davey died, but now she was sleeping even worse because of the haunting images of the forest burning down and her constant guilt that she hadn't been able to shake for nearly a month now. It would haunt her forever and she couldn't do anything about it. So, she decided to head up to the tower to get some fresh air and some alone time so she could think about things.
As she crept up the stairs, she heard the soft sounds of a guitar being played and a male voice. So as not to disturb the room's occupant, she tiptoed up the remainder of the stairs and peeked around the corner, slightly suspicious of the culprit. Her inkling was confirmed as she squinted into the darkness, finally making out the shape of Luke O'Sullivan. He had to be her best guy friend, besides Reuben of course. She was embarrased to admit that she had had a crush on him ever since first year, but she had swept that aside lately and almost got rid of it. Almost being the key word of course.
As stealthily as possible, she ran quietly towards her friend and jumped onto the seat beside him with a smile. "Boo!" she said loudly, trying to scare him. "Couldn't sleep either?" she asked with a smile.

Luke jumped and immediately stopped humming. However, he did keep strumming his guitar. The nook was quite confined, and he could feel his knees slightly brushing Cat's. He tried his best to ignore this. After all, they were just friends. Right? He looked back over at his companion as he answered her question. "Yeah, overthinking. Again," he said with a shrug and a grin. He was about to ask her why she couldn't sleep, but he remembered a lot of things that she could be worrying about, so he didn't ask. He didn't want to upset her.

Cat nodded. "Same here. There's so much going on... I just want to be semi-normal for once," she admitted. "High school is complicated enough. Add a boarding school and a ghost infestation and it's so overdramatic it hurts." She chuckled at her own explanation while she reached across and plucked a string of Luke's guitar randomly. Being with her friend made her feel much happier than she had in a long time. As she did this, she accidentally brushed Luke's hand and turned slightly pink.

Luke kept his hand there for a split second longer than he probably should have. He avoided Cat's eyes and drew it away. It felt quite nice, actually. Her hand was warm and soft against his cold, rough ones. Hard as he tried, he couldn't draw his eyes away from his friend sitting in front of him. She was only his friend. Although, he had to admit that he had harboured a thing for her since they first met. She was gorgeous and smart and nice and fun. The only reason why he hadn't asked her out long ago was because of Reuben. The two of them were also the best of friends and he didn't want to steal his best friend's girlfriend who also happened to be another one of his best friends. That would not be good.
Trying to forget about the awkward moment, he replied to Cat's comment. "Yeah... those ghosts just screw everything up now."

Luke's hands were rough and cold against Cat's, and it felt comforting against hers. As soon as she realized this, she drew her hand away quickly. "Sorry," she muttered. You have a boyfriend. You can't do this, she told herself. Think of Reuben. Although, she hadn't seen him in ages. Still. Cat would never dream of two-timing anyone. Come on Cat. Get a grip. You can't like your best guy friend. She looked down, but looked up at him again, catching him looking at her. "The ghosts are screwing things up a lot. It's scaring me..." she admitted.

The boy tried to smile encouragingly at his friend. Although he had never experienced some of the trauma his friend had, he tried to sympathize with her. "Any sane person would be scared," he said honestly. He almost reached out and grabbed her hand to comfort her, but used all his self restraint not to. It would just complicate things too much. He strummed his guitar quickly. "And you know more than any sane person about this," he added.

Cat nodded. "I guess it's just one of those things... when you know too much, you can't back out. And now that we keep uncovering all these clues, I just can't back out and leave everyone else to suffer," she said sadly. "Sometimes I wish things were just ... normal." She was pouring her heart out to him, she knew that, but it wasn't weird at all.

Luke nodded understandingly. He knew that Cat wasn't an incredibly open person and was surprised to hear her saying her thoughts out loud to him. It was not something he heard often from her. "You sound really stressed about this..." he said. He mentally slapped himself. Now that was probably the stupidest thing he had said his entire life. Why are you so stupid sometimes? he asked himself.

"You think? I have way too much to worry about with the musical and guilt and Reuben and everyone else and the ghosts!" Cat snapped hotly. As soon as she said that, she felt bad for lashing out at her friend. She knew he was just trying to help. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I'm just on edge right now..."

The words stung Luke but he accepted Cat's apology. "Sorry. It was a stupid comment..." he said, his words almost a whisper. Whatever he said, he seemed to screw it up, so he didn't say anything. Instead, he stared blankly out the window. He wanted to help his friend through this, but he had no advice because this was an incredibly bizarre situation.

"No, you were just trying to help Luke," Cat said earnestly, looking her friend straight in the eyes, even though the direction was up about 4 inches. Luke was much taller than her. Most people were taller than her, but she didn't mind. She shrugged, clasping her hands together in her lap. "I guess its kinda hard to understand my situation, right?" she asked. "I know if I was you I would be completely confused right now."

"Yeah, I don't really know what's going on so it's hard to sympathise, but I'm trying my best," Luke said with a slight grin on his face. "It's kind of lame that I know nothing about the ghosts at all yet you're one of the masterminds trying to solve the puzzle," he added, saying the last part with a hint of sarcasm. "I wonder about it all the time, what exactly is going on. You never tell me anything and I want to help."

Cat shook her head. Boys. They all wanted to be heroic. "It's really dangerous, Luke, and I don't want you to get hurt. I'm guilty enough right now," she told him. Hurting Luke and his cute little mop of hair and gap in his teeth would probably drive her to suicide. "Please don't get involved," she begged. "Please."

Luke shook his head. "You don't understand. I just want to help..." he said, trailing off because of a lack of words to express his thoughts. He really didn't know what to say. He could either say that he worried too much about her and Reuben and everyone else, or he could say that he worried because he completely loved her. No, you don't, he tried to convince himself. You can't. He just stayed silent and stared out the window at the grounds beneath them. However, his eyes did divert towards Cat. She was so pretty.
Stop it, Luke, he thought to himself. Stop being delusional. It's never going to happen.
ooc: LOL 'his cute little mop of hair and the gap in his teeth'.
